Dry Ice Drama

Looking to add some drama to your event bar? Create a stir with dry ice.

What is dry ice?

Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide with a temperature of approximately -79 degrees. When added to a liquid it skips liquid form; moving straight from a solid to a gas and creates a mesmerising fog as it does so.

Is it safe for cocktails?

Yes – as long as the dry ice is certified as ‘food grade’. There is no taste, no odour, colour or oily residue left behind so the make up of your cocktail remains unchanged.

The dry ice sinks to the bottom of the glass but it is really important not to ingest it whilst it’s melting or allow your bare skin to come into contact with it – the risk of frostbite and internal damage is high due to the temperature difference.

Why does my event need dry ice?

Dry ice isn’t just for Halloween, many other events can benefit from it’s unique properties. For corporate events the extra customer engagement at the bar can be invaluable and will keep your bar at the forefront of guests minds for a long time to come. Naturally the theatrics lend themselves to social media posting which creates another level of advertising for your brand.

I’ve blogged before about the importance of garnishes in cocktails and the effect it plays on the senses, dry ice takes the experience to another level and heightens all the senses. You can see the fog as it melts; hear the bubbles in your glass and feel the vibrations as it dissipates. The mist which leaves your glass is tiny droplets of water which carry scent of the drink with them. You’re surrounded by your cocktail before you’ve even taken a sip!

The use of dry ice also slows down the drinking process, it naturally gives people pause as they wait for the ice to melt. From a ‘drink aware’ aspect and responsible drinking this cannot be a bad thing.

I’m worried about using it in my drinks but still want the experience, what can I do?

If you’d prefer not to use it in your guests drinks you can still create the drama by housing it in ice buckets and adding warm water (keeping them out of arms reach). Mix a flavoured syrup into the water and let the scent carry around the room on the mist.
